FAQ

1.   What is MMA?

MMA is a hybrid sport allowing participation by all martial arts and hand-to-hand combat styles. As a result, competitors must be well rounded in stand-up striking and grappling techniques. In MMA, the safety of the fighters is paramount. The introduction of rules and regulations that help ensure the safety of participants has contributed to the popularity and meteoric rise of the sport. The MMAT Center offers a safe and challenging activity for youth, teens, men and women.

MMA is fun, a real challenge and can safely be practiced by children, teens, men and women. It’s not uncommon to see entire families enjoying rigorous MMA training together!

2.   I would love to train but I don’t want to get hit or hurt

Safety of the participants of our program is of the up most concern to    the instructors. At no time will you be forced to do something you aren’t ready for and/or want to do. Day to day training doesn’t include abuse of the body. You can’t make gains in fitness or ability if you are injured. Not that the training isn’t vigorous and you may be sore for a while after starting. Even the fighters don’t abuse their bodies

3.   Can I do just Muay Thai?

At the MMAT Center you design your own program with the help of our instructors. Whether you goal is fitness, grappling or competition we have a program for you. You can do just one of the disciplines we teach, such as Boxing or BJJ. Or you design the program to learn the entire art of MMA. We can also add in strength training cardio. We have many students who specialize for a variety of reasons.

4.   Do I have to Compete

The majority of our students train for the conditioning, sport and self-defense aspects of MMA and may never compete outside of the school, however the MMAT center offers opportunities in sanctioned events and competition training for those who wish to enter the ring.

For minors (under 18), the only competition available to them is in the grappling arena – no striking allowed.  Students from the MMAT Center can attend tournaments promoted by the North American Grappling Association (NAGA); events are held in New England several times per year with divisions for age, experience and weight to insure safety and fairness.

5.   After watching the UFC, I am not sure I want my child to be involved with the sport

Our youth program is designed to teach the different aspects of MMA while at the same time focusing on safety, fitness and attitude of the participants. For Youth and Teen students of the MMAT Center, we require a signed Code of Conduct Contract as it is our goal to develop strong men and women, both of body and character.  One of our teen students told his parents that MMA training would be a valuable tool for him when confronted with the temptations of the age (drugs, alcohol).  Even though the commercial for drug abuse prevention promote “Just Say No”, it’s simply not that easy.  However, when professional MMA fighters – their instructors and currently the coolest people on the planet – require a healthy lifestyle for their students with consequences for noncompliance, it’s a very strong defense for avoidance of illegal substances.  Just as important is our requirement of “No Fighting”.  Competition in sanctioned and supervised events is available (grappling only, no striking for minors) for those who want to test their skills.

6.   Do I have to sign a contract

The short answer is yes. We do have agreements that spell out the responsibility of the school as well as the student. It also defines the price you pay and locks it in for the term of the agreement. However we pride ourselves on providing legendary customer service and if for some reason your life changes we do include a 30-day written notice to provide you with options. The instructors have many years of experience and are professionals; hence they want to work with committed students. This just isn’t possible with a drop-in program.  The MMAT Center has provided a world-class facility for you to train in. Gone are the days of training in a basement or garage.

7.   Can I train privately?

Private training is available with all our instructors. Private lessons can really help your development in a short period of time. See the Instructor of your choice for more information.

8.   Do you have morning classes?
